While European governments strive to rein on spending on public services, an ever-increasing number of people are placing more demands on the continent's healthcare systems. The current state of healthcare systems is plagued by a number of difficulties, including a shortage of healthcare workers, an aging population, and constraints on financial resources. One solution to these problems is the employment of smart technologies and other revolutionary approaches. Interdisciplinary Assessment of Personal Health Monitoring is a PDF document that presents selected contributions to a symposium on Personal Health Monitoring (PHM) and Ethics and future areas of PHM. This symposium took place prior to the 11th World Congress of Bioethics, which was held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in June of 2012. The majority of these publications present the results of the European PHM-Ethics project, which was an interdisciplinary study of various PHM applications that were being developed. Additional invited contributions address critical issues that are connected to the major goals and outcomes of the project. The project has a substantial connection to the new e-Health Action Plan, which was introduced by the European Commission in December 2012 and is intended to integrate the advantageous features of digital technologies into existing healthcare delivery systems. The Interdisciplinary Assessment of Personal Health Monitoring covers a broad spectrum, ranging from the technical setup of PHM systems to ethical issues mentioned by PHM applications; and it will be of interest to all those who are related with improving the provision of healthcare all over the world.
